What is Aikido?

Aikido ("The Way of Harmony") is an ethical and highly effective self defense system for anyone and any profession.

Techniques do not require size or strength. There is no fighting and there are no contests, competitions or tournaments. It is dynamic and magical to see and even more rewarding to practice.

It emphasizes appropriate response and de-escalation but can be seriously decisive if needed.

Pins & Come-Alongs

All Aikido techniques can be applied as throws and projections but also as come-alongs to neutralize an opponent and/or pins to contain, restrain or arrest in the case case of police and any law enforcement and security officers.

With this in mind, the main skills gained by any students are increased awareness of one's self and one's surrounding as well as effective evasion and escape skills. Followed by the full application of any Aikido techniques when warranted.

Are there competitions in Aikido?

There are no competitions, tournaments or contests in traditional Aikido.

Competitions have strict rules and are always against only one opponent. In Aikido training we have to be aware of all of the opponents capabilities — can they bite, kick? produce a weapon? be joined by other attackers? In Aikido we train to handle all of these scenarios. All while actually taking care of our partner (opponent) for both safety and de-escalation options.

What is Iaido?

Iaido is the "Way of the Sword". Sincere students are taught proper drawing and handling of the Japanese long sword called a katana.

Iaido is a strictly solo practice of long-established traditional sword forms for developing awareness, precision, posture, balance and power. Practicing Iaido enhances both Aikido & Karate training.

Prospective students should have a basis in proper dojo etiquette and be familiar with basic bokken.

Weapons Training

Both our Aikido and Karate training offers traditional weapons practice that also enhance our Aikido and Karate skills.

The traditional weapons practice in Aikido are bokken (wooden sword), jo (wooden staff) and tanto (wooden knife). All enhance Aikido's hand-to-hand skills.
